Veterinary Health - Airway Disease
Inflammation of the Small Airways

Poor air quality contributes to respiratory disorders ranging from COPD (Heaves) to Small Airway Disease.
COPD is triggered by irritants in the horse’s environment and can manifest in many degrees of severity. At worst the symptoms will be a chronic cough whilst at rest, whilst some animals will have the disease but not show any obvious symptoms.

COPD may not have an initial effect when the horse is used for pleasure. However, over time or when the horse is put under extreme exertion the experience becomes distressing for the animal as a result of inhibited respiratory function.

Causes of Airway Disease

  1. Infectious agents (bacteria & viruses)
  2. Airborne Dust (nuisance dust & allergens)
  3. Noxious Gases (Ammoni

Dust

Dust is divided into 2 groups, ‘nuisance dust’ & ‘Allergens’. Nuisance dust includes plant particles, whereas allergens are mould, spores, pollen & mites.

Traditional Bedding carries all of the above.
